Dr. George O. White III is a Professor of Strategic Management in the School of Management at the University of Michigan–Flint. He also serves as a Core Faculty member in the International and Global Studies Program at the University of Michigan-Flint, a Faculty Affiliate with the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), a Non-Resident Research Fellow with the Asian Institute of Management in the Philippines, and as a Visiting Professor at NIDA Business School in Thailand. He teaches courses on Global Strategy, Strategic Management, Business & Corporate Strategy, and Theory in International Business.

Dr. White's expertise lies in global strategy. His research studies ways in which the legal and regulatory environment influence multinational enterprise (MNE) strategic behavior and performance outcomes, primarily in Southeast Asia. Within this domain, he investigates: (1) phenomenon associated with MNE foreign subsidiary nonmarket strategies (business-government interaction, political ties, corruption), (2) how dimensions of legal and regulatory institutions affect foreign subsidiary strategic behavior and performance, and (3) MNE foreign subsidiary strategic initiatives as they relate to cooperative relationships and formal contracting. Dr. White is currently conducting a multi-year research study investigating the effects of legal and regulatory institutions on MNE strategic behavior and performance outcomes in the Philippines and Thailand. He has performed extensive fieldwork in Southeast Asia surveying senior executives of MNE foreign subsidiaries with regard to strategic behavior and performance outcomes. His research has been published in over thirty academic journal articles and book chapters, including in a wide array of business journals such as the Journal of World Business, Journal of International Management, International Business Review, Management International Review, Multinational Business Review, Thunderbird International Business Review, the European Journal of International Management, and the International Journal of Emerging Markets, as well as leading international law journals such as the Texas International Law Journal and North Carolina Journal of Law & Commercial Regulation, among other respected outlets. He has been ranked by the Journal of International Business Studies (Sun, Doh, Rajwani, and Siegel, 2021) as a leading scholar in the field of multinational nonmarket strategy. Furthermore, Dr. White serves as a member of the Editorial Advisory/Review Board for the Journal of World Business, Journal of International Management, Management International Review, Multinational Business Review, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, Asian Business and Management, Journal of Asia Business Studies, Journal of Asia-Pacific Business, and the European Journal of International Management. He is also currently serving as Guest Editor for special issues at the Journal of International Management and Multinational Business Review.

Dr. White has received several honors and awards, including the Best Reviewer Award from the Academy of International Business and Best Reviewer Award from the Academy of Management. At the University of Michigan-Flint, he has been honored by receiving the Win Cooper II Faculty Excellence Award, the Hagerman Faculty Entrepreneurship & Innovation Award, the Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching, and several Golden Apple awards for teaching excellence. He also received a Shining Star award for teaching excellence at Old Dominion University. Dr. White studied Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan on an Academic Language Exchange Scholarship at Feng Chia University and was an alternate for the prestigious Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (Ministry of Education) Chinese Language Scholarship.

Dr. White earned a Ph.D. in International Business, with an emphasis on international strategy, from the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso; an MBA in General Management from the College of Business Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso; an LL.M. in International Commercial Law from the Graduate School of Law at Emory University; a J.D. in Law and Certificate in International Law from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, where he received the American Jurisprudence Book Award for Scholarly Writing and served as the Senior Notes, Comments, and Essays Editor for the Western Michigan University Cooley Law Journal; a Certificate in Mandarin Chinese from Feng Chia University in Taichung, Taiwan; and a B.A. in History, with an emphasis on Asia, from the University of Alabama. He was also a post-graduate student in Asian studies at the Center for Asian Studies, University of Alabama.

Dr. White was previously an Associate Professor of Strategic Management and International Business (with tenure) in the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University. Prior to his position at Old Dominion University, he taught as an Assistant Professor of International Business and Strategy in the School of Management at the University of Michigan-Flint. Before pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Texas at El Paso, Dr. White worked in China as a Research Fellow and Visiting Professor of International Business Law and Global Commerce at Hebei Normal University, where he was subsequently appointed as an Honorary Professor. He also taught as an Adjunct Professor of International Business Law and Global Commerce at the Shijiazhuang College of Law and Commerce. While in China, he worked as a strategy consultant and was appointed by the municipal government as an Economic Adviser to the Shijiazhuang National Hi-Tech Industry Development Zone where he acted as a liaison to MNEs and advised on strategic matters. During graduate school, he interned with the Office of the General Counsel at the United States Agency for International Development (Asia and Near East Bureau) in Washington, D.C. and taught English as a second language in Taiwan. Dr. White has consulted on a wide variety of projects concerning MNE nonmarket strategy, foreign direct investment, and WTO rules, regulations, and policies in Southeast Asia and China. Dr. White has also acted as a strategy facilitator to organizations in fostering new insight concerning strategic thinking and planning (at home and when internationalizing abroad). He has studied, worked, and lived in the Philippines, Thailand, China, Taiwan, and Hungary.
